Counting down the greatest road trip music of all time – Paducah Sun

Road trips and music are made for each other.

Like Lindsay Lohan and DUIs, they’ve settled into a long, comfortable relationship.

While any and all tunes help fight sleep deprivation and glazed-over boredom, some artists and groups do it better.

Sure Celine Dion may at least keep me awake (not to mention make me rip my hair out and go cross-eyed) but Guns N’ Roses circa 1987 helps me log highway miles with more gusto.

Which got me thinking. Who would make the top-ten list of Greatest Road Trip Bands/Artists of All Time?

I know, I know. You’re as anxious about this list as Cleveland is over LeBron’s one-hour special announcement show tonight on ESPN. But unlike Bron Bron, I deliver without all the hype and circumstance.

10. Jay-Z. Few rappers have the expansive catalogue of Shawn Carter, and from “Money Ain’t A Thang” to “Young Forever” his hits are an entry to the rap in your collection.

9. Eagles. Must be on the list when lines from “Take It Easy” are “Well, I’m running down the road trying to loosen my load I’ve got seven women on my mind” and “Don’t let the sound of your own wheels drive you crazy.”

8. Guns N’ Roses. It’s impossible to not sing along when in “Welcome To The Jungle,” Axl Rose belts out “Watch it bring you to your shun n, n, n, n, n, n, n, n, n, n, knees, knees.” It’s also an ominous song to play heading into a new town.

7. Dexy’s Midnight Runners. Yes, for only one song — “Come On Eileen.” It can also start a conversation about the thoroughly 1980s music video.

6. Garth Brooks. Tough call between Brooks and George Strait at this spot since both can fill a couple double CD sets with hits. Brooks gets the nod for more non-country fan appeal but both serve country well.

5. The most current pop song. No road trip is complete without getting a new catchy ditty stuck in your noggin for 100 miles or so. This also leads to you hating the song forever. Example: “Airplanes” by B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams and Eminem.

4. The unknown. Stuck behind the wheel is an ideal place to delve into an album you haven’t heard yet. This also reminds us how seldom it is that we take time to listen to a new one all the way through.

3. Sublime (Bradley Nowell days). It’s not just that the California trio changed speeds quicker than John Wall. Or that it perfected the art of the catchy punk-pop chorus. It did both while telling good stories.

2. Tom Petty. The greatest hits album with The Heartbreakers should come with a road map in every CD sleeve.

1. Creedence Clearwater Revival. I don’t care if Eastern European polka is your favorite genre, John Fogerty’s sinewy voice will speak to you when the rubber hits the road.

Rockin’ out with Slash – Berwick News

The 47-year-old admitted he was star struck when he met Slash as part of the winning prize, which involved him travelling to Paris to collect Triple Ms new theme song, recorded by Slash.

To celebrate Triple Ms 30th birthday, the radio station is bringing Dr Dan back to life.

Dr Dan is the guitar wielding rock-god known to be associated with the network throughout the 80s and 90s.

Slash recorded the new Dr Dan theme song in LA before Mr Cuttunar collected the track from him and brought it back to Australia for the launch.

The track was played on air to listeners for the first time on Tuesday 29 June.

Upon first hearing the track, Slash said he could imagine a way it would sound really cool.

It would actually be fun to go in and have a stab at that and see if we could make it more, I hate to use this word, but its the only word I can think of, a little bit more contemporary, in a rock way, Slash said.

Mr Cuttunar said he had a gut feeling he could win the competition when he made the first phone call to the station.

I called up to enter it and found out I had been short-listed, he said.

I had this feeling I could win it, and I did.

Mr Cuttunar received the phone call to say he had won while on his way to work.

It felt awesome to win. I was speechless. It was a cool surprise, he said.

Mr Cuttunar travelled to Paris with his partner Cathie and met Slash before seeing him perform at a concert in front of 5000 fans.

We got autographs. Im a real Guns N Roses fan, he said.

Slash is certainly one of the best guitarists. His music is awesome.

Mr Cuttunar said he got a real buzz when he got to stand on stage with Slash during the gig.

Mr Cuttunar, who has lived in Narre Warren South for 25 years, seems to have luck when it comes to winning radio competitions.

I won the Battle of the Backyard Ashes competition about 15 years ago, and the Victorian cricket team came to play in my garden, he said.

Ive also scored many concert passes over the years, he said.

Power Balladz, Featuring Rock Anthems, to Play Off-Broadway’s Midtown Theatre – Playbill.com

By Andrew Gans

07 Jul 2010

Following a sold-out premiere at The LAB Theatre (formerly the Guthrie Lab Theatre) in Minneapolis, the new musical Power Balladz will begin previews at Off-Broadway’s Midtown Theatre Aug. 5 with an official opening scheduled for Aug. 19.

The 90-minute tribute to the rock anthems of the 70s, 80s and 90s features direction by Mike Todaro. The cast comprises Dieter Bierbrauer, Scott Richard Foster and Mary Mossberg.

Audiences can expect tunes by Guns ‘N’ Roses, Journey, Heart, Queens, Bon Jovi, Styx and more.

Power Balladz was created by Todaro, Dan Nycklemoe with Peter Rothstein, and written by Todaro and Nycklemoe.

At Power Balladz, press notes state, “you can celebrate the best music of the 70’s 80’s and 90’s and liberate the rock star inside of you. The formula is simple: start with some blood-pumping arena rock songs by Motley Crue, Poison, Guns ‘N’Roses, Journey and other kick-ass arena bands, add some talented rock singers, give them a full band, lots of lights, a fog machine, a video projection screen, plenty of leather and long hair, and you’ve got a concert, indeed an extravaganza. And while the Power Balladz band knows how to rock, the show takes an unexpected turn when the high school sweetheart of one of the musicians stumbles into the show after ten years apart, raising the question — will he be man enough to finally score the girl of his dreams?”

The design team features Bradley Clements and Hilary Noxon (lighting design), Alex Ritter (sound design), Abbi Stern (costume design) and Dan Nycklemoe (media design). Jason Loffredo is the music supervisor.

The evening begins 30 minutes prior to curtain with interactive trivia games, rock trivia contests and an opportunity for the audience to socialize. Following the performance, ticket holders have access to a live-band rock anthem karaoke show during which they are welcome to perform on stage.

Show times are Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Sundays at 9 PM and Saturdays at 6 PM and 10 PM.

Midtown Theatre is located at 163 West 46th Street. Tickets, priced $69.99 (general admission/cabaret seating with drink service) or $89.99 (VIP seating directly in front of the stage, two complimentary drinks and a souvenir), are available by calling (212) 352-0255 or by visiting www.powerballadz.com.

Knowing how remote the chances of seeing the reformation of the original Appetite For Destruction lineup are, most Guns N Roses fans now find themselves attending a number of different shows at different size venues in order to see their heroes in the flesh. While William Bruce Rose Jnr. continues to tour the Guns N Roses name and with Velvet Revolver on hold, Slash has re-ignited his solo career with a recently released self titled album (this follows 1995’s “Its Five O Clock Somewhere” and 2000’s “Aint Life Grand”). A short European run to promote this work is currently taking place and tonights show in Dublin followed his appearance at Glastonbury’s 40th birthday celebrations last weekend.

Vicar Street is a small venue in Dublin city centre located on Thomas Street, one kilometere from Trinity College. Its capacity is 1000 and this show sold out in minutes when tickets were released last month. The crowd were crammed in from 8pm and at a minute to 9pm, the house lights were killed.Ripping into “Ghost” off the new album for openers, the 900 people on the floor standing section swayed from wall to wall. However, even though Slash’s band delivered the tune note perfectly, it immediately became apparent that there was a problem with Myles Kennedy’s voice. This was quickly addressed before the second song. “I gonna need your help tonight Dublin. I’ve got the flu and my throat hurts”, explained Kennedy to a psyched crowd. This declaration didnt phase the crowd one bit with a round of applause offered in appreciation of his willingness to perform while ill, rather than cancel the show.

A wide selection of material was played during the hour and forty minutes performance. Material from his entire career (solo work, Velvet Revolver and Guns N Roses) was delivered with a ferocity that resulted in an electric atmosphere in the venue. Around the half hour mark, Kennedy’s voice more or less seized up altogether. His role thereafter consisted of vocal conductor to the crowd for the rest of the evening. The audience’s knowledge of Slash’s work to date proved flawless with every line of every song played thereafter recited word by word. “We came here to give you guys a great show tonight. You’ve given us a great show Dublin”, was how Kennedy summed up the crowds vocal performance. Having been introduced to Phil Lynott’s (Thin Lizzy) mother Philomena before the show who presented him with a mini-statue of her son, Slash told the crowd, “I cant think of any other city in the world that makes me feel so welcome every time I come here. You’re amazing Dublin”.

Slash Discusses New Album and Velvet Revolver Singer Search – Spinner

The Ting Tings have finished work on the follow-up to their 2008 debut album ‘We Started Nothing.’ Singer Katie White told the BBC’s Newsbeat the new album was “very different to the first one. It’s still us and it’s still pop. It’s just huge.”

For its recording, White and her partner-in-crime drummer Jules de Martino decamped to Berlin last Christmas. The city certainly played its part in the song-writing process, “It definitely has an impact on how you write. Even like the weather because it was so cold when we got there at Christmas. It was like minus 25C (-13F) and just snowed for a month-and-a-half.”

The somewhat bleak conditions, although depressing at times, have according to White meant the new music now feels “dancey or dark.”

“It’s just huge – the whole spectrum of it. [There is] one that’s really dancey, one which sounds like a TLC song, which I love, and everything in between,” White said.

Duff McKagan’s Loaded Set to Re-Load in August – Gibson

Duff McKagan’s Loaded will begin recording their next album in August, says frontman Duff McKagan. In a statement, the former Guns N’ Roses and Velvet Revolver member said, “We have been writing for the last few months and next week we start pre-production on the new Loaded record! We couldn’t be happier and we think [fans] will be, too! As it is looking, we will be recording it in August and thus begins Loaded Mach III!”

The group recently parted ways with their record company, Century Media Records, after releasing one EP (2008’s Wasted Heart) and one full-length album (2009’s Sick) through that label. Last year, drummer Geoff Reading left the band and was replaced by Isaac Carpenter, whose previous work included stints with Loudermilk and The Exies. The current Loaded lineup also includes bassist Jeff Rouse and guitarist Mike Squires.

It’s Angels v Gunners boss – Sydney Morning Herald

First it was Men at Work v Larrikin. Now a former manager of Guns N’ Roses, Alan Niven, is taking to court two former guitarists for the Angels, John and Richard Brewster (now performing as the Brewster Brothers) in California. Niven – who managed Guns N’ Roses during their pomp from 1986 to 1991 and also briefly managed the Angels from 1988-89, winning them their first US record contract – alleges that after a family breakdown, he recruited Rick Brewster to the US in 2001 to help him record some songs he had written. However, Niven alleges, after a brief creative flowering, which led to an agreement that Niven would supply pop songs ”on spec”, the pair went on to derive, perform and sell songs Niven claims are his. He is suing for infringement of copyright, breach of contract, violation of moral rights, and for the return of ”a Gibson 335” and ”an American Fender Stratocaster with a maple neck”. Niven’s lawyer, Eric Bjorgum, said: ”We have received no contact from them, except from their attorney saying he would not accept service of process. The dollar amounts that were put forth were minimal; no return of guitars was offered. The songs were taken off iTunes, then put back up. I haven’t checked recently, but they should be down again. This is not something that Mr Niven took lightly, nor is he happy to be involved in litigation with former associates and friends. We understand the reputation of the Brewsters and their contribution to music. But at some point Mr Niven was entitled to appropriate recognition … He would also like to be able to perform and market his own songs, but a shadow is cast across them now.”

A WHOLE LOTTA UGG

A world record was set at Martin Place yesterday for the largest number of people dancing in slippers. From 8am to 9am about 100 people, or 200 feet (that’s 1000 toes), mostly clad in ugg boots, leapt up and down at the direction of Zumba instructors to publicise Lifeline’s Stress Down Day, to be held on July 23. Chris Wagner of Lifeline said they settled on this record because ”dancing in slippers is less stressful than dancing in clogs”, which was the other record available. ”We’re asking the community to take a day off from stress,” he said. ”About 90 per cent of Australians are stressed every day in five key areas: health, work, finance, personal relationships and thoughts of the future.” If you think that’s a stressful thought in itself, then try this: ”About 43 per cent or 9.5 million Australians feel high levels of stress every day.” Lifeline says the best way to prevent stress is also the simplest: eat well, exercise and get a good night’s sleep. ”A good night’s sleep is essential. It gives you a really good perspective.”

THE ROYAL PRENUP

Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden and her new husband, the prince formerly known as Daniel Westling, have lodged a prenuptial agreement, leaving him without a claim to her inheritance or income if they split, the Associated Press reports. Any IKEA furniture they purchase, however, will be split down the centre as the contract entitles Westling to only half of their private household possessions. Last year the crown princess’s household received 4.8 million kronor ($740,000) – or 8 per cent of state funds reserved for the royal court. After they married, the Duke of Vastergotland, as he is now, quit his job as chief executive of a gym he owns. And in other royal ”news”, a fire at a Toronto transformer station plunged Canada’s largest city into darkness on Monday, a couple of hours before a state dinner for the Queen, and during an earlier presentation by Prince Philip of Duke of Edinburgh Awards. An emergency power supply kicked in a dim supply of light and Prince Philip, doubtless calling on decades of practice, carried on in uncertain surroundings.

A BIG DAY FOR ROBERT DE NIRO

The film trucks were dotted discreetly around the nearby streets but the eagle-eyed may have noticed the kerbside Renaults and Citroens, while the uniformly young and good-looking patrons soaking up the rays at the footpath tables were dressed in slightly retro attire. But even the eagle-eyed could have missed Robert De Niro shuffling his way from a phone booth to the front door of The European restaurant. After four takes, each a minute long, he was gone. The publicity-shy actor, director and restaurateur is in Melbourne for about 10 days to shoot a small role in the action-adventure film The Killer Elite, a $66 million production with Australian finance. It’s adapted from the ”factual” novel The Feathermen, written by English adventurer and former SAS man Sir Ranulph Fiennes. Yesterday’s scene was meant to be Paris, 1979, and the precinct that will no doubt become known as the Paris end of Spring Street was a worthy double. Peugeot enthusiast John Vagg got the call at home in Ballarat on Monday night to be in Melbourne with his car for a 9am start yesterday. ”Never heard of him,” he said of De Niro. ”I suppose I’ll have to buy a ticket and go have a look when it comes to the cinema.”

STAY IN TOUCH …

WITH THE CATFIGHTING IN ABBA-LAND

THE Abba tribute bands of Australia are facing their own Waterloo. Sydney’s Fabba has challenged global professional pretenders Bjorn Again to a sing-off. Anthea Johnson, who has wowed audiences as Fabba’s Frida at venues including Gymea Bowling Club and Rhythmboat Cruises, said they were the most-booked Abba tribute in the country and it was time for Bjorn Again to prove they were the true dancing queens. “Bjorn Again and Fabba are known as the best,” she said. However, she thinks Fabba give better value for Money, Money, Money. ”Fabba gets the most work because they are not only good, they are cheap,” she said. While turning a profit (and getting publicity) might be the name of the game, Johnston revealed what most audiences don’t know: the Abba tribute rivalry in Sydney can be fierce. “It is very competitive between the bands, but there are good, bad and ugly Abba tribute bands,” Johnson said. ”It’s all quite amusing.” Bjorn Again’s owner and manager, John Tyrrell – who had never heard of Fabba – agreed. ”This is laughable,” he said. ”Bjorn Again is a band that’s endorsed by Abba, it plays at the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall. We’ve done over 5000 shows in 70 countries.” That’s hardly a (wait for it) SOS, but Peter Varley, director of another Sydney contender, Abba’s Back, was backing Bjorn Again. But if Bjorn Again’s State Theatre run next month sells out, fans could take a chance on them, too. ”The quality of vocals, costumes and musicianship also puts [Abba's Back] in a class … not to be compared with ‘try-hards’,” he said.

WITH THE ORIGIN BLUES

THE Blues’ fifth consecutive State of Origin series defeat is assured no matter the result tonight, but the NSW government would do well to hope the pain doesn’t last too long. Studies in the US have found that a win for a local sporting team in the lead-up to an election makes voters more inclined to back the incumbent. Bob Hawke and John Howard made a habit of associating with sport, sometimes with mixed results. ”We find that a win in the 10 days before election day causes the incumbent to receive an additional 1.61 percentage points of the vote,” the authors of the Stanford University study said. Even so, a win for the Panthers on the eve of Labor’s annihilation last month in the Penrith byelection, unsuprisingly, showed that a league win is not enough to help unfit performers over the line. The ALP strategist Bruce Hawker said that when the South Australian government called an election in 1997 during the AFL finals, people’s attention was so focused on the Adelaide Crows winning that the government almost lost. ”The grand final was one week before election day and it was impossible to get anyone to focus on politics.”

WITH WARD SEX

A LONDON hospital earned a ‘’substantial income” by hiring out one of its wards to a ”big-budget” porn film, it has emerged. A Tory MP, Penny Mordaunt, told the the House of Commons on Monday that the filming took place in a fully equipped ward in an unnamed hospital several years ago, the Press Association reports. ”Although I cannot claim to have seen the final picture – as I understand, these things are no longer claimable on parliamentary expenses – it was a big-budget affair and generated substantial income for the hospital,” she said. Mordaunt cited the incident while arguing for improved transparency in government accounting. ”But apart from cheering up a few of the in-patients, it cannot be said to be contributing to the objectives of the primary care trust,” she said.
